Thanks for the tips. I found a fuel system leak and the boat ran great-for awhile. Fixed fuel leak and changed plugs. ran great for an hour, shut down and had lunch and ran back at less than planing speed(my choice). Used same amount of fuel running back. Check the plugs. Top plug was tan. The middle and bottom plugs where like new - except for a little oil they looked like they just came out of the box. I bought the plugs at a yamaha dealer pre gapped. Idles really rough but starts good. Any ideas why the differences?

    vicman,
Sounds like your carbs may be gummed up a little - try doing a shock treatment with Seafoam to de-carbonize your motor and clean the fuel system. If that doesn't help the rough idle, maybe do a carb rebuild.
    Good luck,

Thanks for the adice Ken. Just thought I'd update the situation - it might help others. I checked with the Yamaha dealer here in Victoria. They said that one plug normal and two clean (3 cylinder motor) is most likely caused by a bad fuel pump. I replaced the diaphrams and no more loss of power. Ran through 80 litres of feul and no loss of power!. Still idles rough so I guess cleaning the carbs is next. Is there any other products I can use beside SeaFoam? SeaFoam is not available in this part of Canada yet. Would any one know if it is available in Anacortes or Port Angeles Washinton State?

        vicman,
A good cleaning agent for carbs is Berryman's Chemtool. You might try pulling the needles out of the jets and squirting some into the seats.
Also, might try running a double dose of Yamaha Ring Free for a while to see if that cleans the carbs up a little.
        Good luck,
        Ken K
