I have a Yamaha fuel management system installed on my single 225 hp 4-stroke. Prior to that it was installed on a 225 2-stroke and it worked perfectly. Consumption registered to within 1% of actual use and the gph was also extremely accurate. With the 4-stroke, the consumption is still very accurate but the gph readings are not. They fluctuate wildly, and I have been told this is because of the type of electronic fuel system on the 4-stokes. The electronic fuel system "tuns on and off" automatically as necessary so it will draw a certain volume of fuel and shut off until the cycle repeats. That's why the gph readings go up and down so erratically. Is that true? If so that means I just have an expensive fuel gauge and not a true fuel management system. Since Yamaha still makes these systems and there are a lot of 4-strokes out there, it's hard to believe they don't work for their intended purpose on all of these engines. Are the new systems designed differently for 4-strokes? if so can mine be upgraded in some way to work properly with my 4-stroke? Thanks very much for any help/suggestions.
