I recently purchased a used 1989 6 hp short shaft yamaha and am beginning to understand the full extent of why it was for sale. The motor will not rotate on the steering shaft. Where should I start in freeing this up? It appears the spindle is froze inside the steering bracket. Can heat be safely applied? Will this help or should I stick with a penetrating fluid? Just a note, applied heat and after multiple applications along with a little more disassembly, problem solved. Will have to replace o rings as either heat damaged them or they were already damaged which might explain why there was corrosion instead of grease inside steering.
