  • Stainless Steel Cotter Pins

I recently had my prop reworked. Anyway I had one
pin that I asked for at the prop shop. I needed to pick
up a socket, and while I was out I figured I should pick
up some extra cotter pins. I stopped in at O'Rileys & I
told them I needed stainless cotter pins. He told me that
he only stocked stainless steel pins. Now I wonder if there
is a great difference between that & marine grade stainless.

We are talking about spending .06 cents at O'Rileys &
    approx $1 for marine.

I get a 100 count box of SS cotter pins at the local Nut&Bolt House for about $5, enough to last me quite a while. I believe stainless is stainless, anyway have had no problems with corrosion or breakage, use a new one every time I remove the prop. You should bend the pin tabs over in a way that there is no movement at all of the pin or nut. Good Luck!

Buying stainless bolts and nuts even pins if you go to places that have old stock, they do not sell many you can buy them at old prices .
say 3 bucks a packet but if you buy from places that sell lots you will pay 3 times that and more i always look in boat shops that do not have big turn over .

hell paying a buck for a split pin so as not to loose a couple hundred dollar prop or .06 cents is like woow

marine grade stainless should be grade 316 but most times it is 304
